The History of Benner’s Gardens

Benner’s Gardens started out in 1992 in New Hope, PA. Since then, the company has moved and grown in multiple ways as we have explored more fencing options and created new tools to improve the speed and effectiveness of fencing to keep animals in or out.

Benner’s Gardens was a stand-alone pioneer in this type of deer fencing and was a family-owned establishment. David Benner, a retired professor of Ornamental Horticulture, tried nearly everything to protect his garden from the high deer population in Pennsylvania. Because his property contained many trees, he decided to attach a 7.5ft tall polypropylene mesh between the trees to keep the deer at bay, which worked! After this discovery, which was much more cost effective than traditional fencing and easier to install, Benner’s Gardens and Benners Deer Fence was born.

In the beginning, the website was simple, lists of common questions and EZ Mall links to fence mesh products. But as the years went by, the internet evolved, and easy quick online shopping options became huge!

Benner’s in 2005:

Back in 2005, there were a variety of post options, U-Posts for gardens and small enclosures, larger heavy duty round posts for perimeter fencing, and corner brace kits for larger fence kits. There were also only 5 different base kits for deer, with rodent barriers and straight tension systems being ordered separately!

Back then, the current owner of Critterfence was a contract installer for Benner’s Gardens. Over the years of working closely with Benners and installing many deer fences, the owner of Critterfence helped improve, develop and implement for many customers what is known as the modern deer fence system that is on the market today. Eventually the founders of Benners decided to sell their business, and Critterfence and Benners parted ways in 2008.

After decades of working to improve, modify, and enhance the modern deer fencing system, Critterfence purchased Benners Gardens in 2022. Critterfence is based in Chester, South Carolina where their offices and main distribution center is located.
